Title

Exploring the performance of TV news in Macau : content analysis of the news coverage on public issues : case study : comparing TDM and MASTV

English Abstract

TV News has always been the major channel for Macau local residents to receive information on crimes, economy and politics. TDM and MASTV are two main media platforms that have high audience rating, although they have different news styles. However, there are some fixed images of the two TV stations among local citizens: TDM is always considered as pro-government media and MASTV as a critical one. Yet, no empirical study has been done in this field in Macao. This study aims at exploring news content, news topics, positions and report balances of the two media in content analysis, so that differences on media positions and media agenda could be discriminated. The results show that TDM focuses on government measures and events in news content, while MASTV focuses on social groups/citizens‟ opinions. TDM is more likely to reports government affairs or government-guided events, while MASTV gives more coverage in criticizing government. Specifically speaking, TDM usually remains neutral when reporting government news; however, nearly half of government news of MASTV are reported with fixed positions.
