Currently, we can witness the rise of social production through observing some well-known phenomena that are taking place around the world. While experiencing the rapid development of social networks, we are given the alternative to take action in loosely structured groups without profitable motives. Such productive activities that are realized through the cooperation of collaborative groups can be defined as social production. Among all the ways of social production, crowdfunding is one pattern that attracts the attention of scholars from various realms while in China it still lacks detailed explorations. In order to study how crowdfunding in China is realized as a pattern of social production, the thesis conducts case studies of four social organizations which have experiences in initiating crowdfunding projects. According to the case studies, the term ‘crowd’ in the case of crowdfunding mainly refers to the friends, fans and weak ties of the creators. Based on these complex social networks, sustainable relationships turn out to be the essence of social production in China since the production of information, knowledge and culture is conducted through the collective wisdom of the crowd.
