Title

A corpus-based study of translation strategy patterns for rendering culture-specific items from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland into Chinese

English Abstract

This is a corpus-based study that investigates translation strategy patterns for rendering culture-specific items (CSIs) from the English source text Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Carroll, 1960) into two Chinese translations by Zhao Yuanren (2002) and Huang Jianren (2010) respectively. Based on the classification offered by Zhou et al. (2014), a total of 608 instances of CSIs are collected from ST. All of them are alien sources, and there are no alien loans or target loans. In this study, the 608 alien sources are further classified into 482 proper names, 63 idiomatic expressions, and 63 other types of CSIs. Four translation strategies—paraphrasing, substitution, deletion, and transcoding—are identified in the translations of CSIs. The two TTs show the same translating tendency of deploying strategies in rendering CSIs, which is transcoding > paraphrasing > deletion > substitution (“>” means “is used more than”). Transcoding is the dominant strategy in both TTs. Apart from it, paraphrasing is used much more than substitution or deletion in both TTs. Detailed discussions of the translation strategy patterns and comparisons between TTs are presented. The thesis also offers some possible reasons for the translation strategy patterns and tentative evaluations of TTs.
