Title

Is childhood obesity influenced by advertising? : exploring the influences of parental, peer and individual factors by reviewing literature

English Abstract

Overweight and obesity are becoming a health problem for children universally. Among all the factors that could contribute to this problem, food and beverage advertisement has been shown to be one of the significant factors that influence children’s overweight and obesity. This paper aims to analyze SSCI academic journal papers from 2001 to 2013 covering the effect studies of food and beverage advertising commercials related to children’s overweight and obesity. It looks for the association of advertising and children’s obesity in the literature, and researcher’s attitudes towards this relationship. It also concludes other important factors that contribute to children’s obesity. The content analysis was employed to analyze relevant literature. The results suggested that advertising is not the main responsible factor for children’s overweight and obesity. The other factors such as parents and peers influence, government policy and school environment all play important role for developing obesity.
