How do media frame "the others" : studying the news of mainland Chinese pregnant women giving birth in Hong Kong, from 2001 to 2012

English Abstract

This research uses cross-media and cross-time analysis to examine news framework representation of new immigration in Hong Kong, especially with regard to its population from mainland China. Notably, an extreme phenomenon, which is mainland Chinese pregnant women giving birth in Hong Kong, has been seriously considered as dual challenges to both Hongkongers self-identity and social resources. The study focus on the mainland Chinese women group represented by the Hong Kong press, drawing on frame analysis and social distinct theory, it develops a three-level news framework from related media coverage. 12 years textual content of Hong Kong newspapers are the research subject, starts from year 2001 to year 2012. After stratified sampling and coding into different framework, the research results shown: Firstly, the number curve of birth rate and the number curve of birthing news are non-correspondence. Birthing news are more likely to be influenced by external causes such as social movements, political debates and online public opinion. Secondly, news from different political spectrum are quite similar in using ideology perceptions frame packages, but replace each other while using populism perception frame packages.
