China's new thinking and practice of economic sanctions

English Abstract

Abstract Economic sanctions have attracted a great deal of attention in recent years because of their increased use and the substantial economic and social costs they impose on targeted countries, businesses and individuals. They also create considerable opportunity costs for firms and investors in the countries of the sanctioning states and major implementation challenges for both developed and developing states. For China, unilateral economic sanction once was cast aside by China and it came back to China's portfolio of foreign policy instruments recently. This phenomenon attracts the interests of some IR scholars and it also draws attention of the author. This thesis mainly aimed at study why China had this change towards economic sanctions recently and the effectiveness of the implementation of this very means. The qualitative study method is adopted to analyze the questions. The thesis contains four important case studies as follows: the economic sanctions against France, the U.S, Japan and the Philippines. The policy suggestions giving to China also listed after the general analysis in this thesis.
