This thesis uses Conversation Analysis and the next-turn proof procedure, which are a perspective and a method of analyzing conversations involving code-switching in a variety show Guess, Guess, Guess in Taiwan. A particular pattern of interactions is uncovered by using the aforementioned perspective and method. The thesis then investigates reasons why speakers receive unexpected responses from their target interlocutors when having conversation where code-switching takes place. The findings show that the pattern happens inevitably as interlocutors have their rights to choose how to respond, yet there are several strategies which improve communication between interlocutors. The strategies include establishment of social roles during the conversation, good observation during the conversation and appropriate usage of verbal and non-verbal expression. Besides, factors such as incorrect/vague pronunciation, lack of lexicon and diverse meaning of a word may hinder efficient communication when having conversations involving code-switching. The study also discusses reasons why data in variety shows, which are a genre of popular culture, is worth being investigated. It is recommended that data of popular culture are valued in sociolinguistics which originally places the emphasis on naturally occurring data. One cannot underestimate the influence of popular culture when investigating the origin of particular linguistic features.
