Title

Speech translation : a functionalist analysis of the welcome speech of the Macao 4th East Asian Games

English Abstract

Studies on speech translation between Chinese and English in Macao are relatively rare. This study attempts to explore the practice of speech translation in Macao. The 4th East Asian Games marked the first time Macao organized a major international sports competition, and sports delegations and press from the eight other participating countries and regions visited Macao for the Games. Therefore, it was important for the publications and information of the Organizing Committee to be translated into English. The translation of the welcome speech delivered by the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the Games at the Opening Ceremony is chosen for this research. The analysis is divided into two major parts. The first part will be the comparison between the different parts of the selected source text, The second part will be the analysis of the translation strategies applied to the selected texts. The research hopes to shed light on whether translation practice varies with the different text types and functions. Key words: text type, semantic translation, communicative translation, speech translation, functionalism
