Title

The origin of piaose and its relationship with drama : a study of piaose in Wuchuan and Leizhou counties in Leizhou Peninsula

English Abstract

Piaose 飄色 is a religious and folk activity which mixes music, drama, acrobatics and decoration together. Lots of its themes are from drama so the relationship between piaose and drama is quite closed. Piaose is a religious ritual, which originates from parading the Buddha statue. It appeared in Meilu, the Leizhou Peninsula at latest during Guangxu emperor of the Qing dynasty. Unlike the text and drama, piaose has its unique way to create gods, eliminate disasters, civilize people and strengthen their consciousness of local and national identity. It is a very important medium to transmit Chinese traditional culture. This article will discuss about its historical origin, parade process, relationship with drama and various functions as a medium. In addition, it will also discuss about piaose of other places inside and outside Guangdong Province in mainland China. Key words: origin, piaose, drama, medium, religious functions
