Abstract In the material world of communication, every single sign may give multiple connotations to the readers. From the contents to its context and from the design to its emplacement, there are always implied meanings juxtaposed with the semantic meaning of the linguistic items. Linguistic landscape aims to trace the phenomena and mindsets beyond the collective use of signs in speech communities. Inspired by the insights of the influential works in the field (Backhaus 2007; Ben-Rafael et al., 2006; Gorter 2006b, Landry and Bourhis 1997; Shohamy and Waksman 2009, etc.), this paper focuses on the language use in signs in the campuses of the University of Macau (UM). As one of the enhancements to the relation between China and Macau, in 2009, the Chinese Government approved the plan for UM to establish a new campus which was not part of Macau— the Hengqin Campus. This study grabs the opportunity of such a special occasion and compares that the linguistic landscape in the old campus and that of the new one. The survey indicates the UM language policy plays an important role in the multilingual practice of both indoor and outdoor signs in which the three languages: Chinese, English and Portuguese are in different frequency and weights. It also captures the shifts of frequency and importance of languages during the campus relocation.
