Abstract of "Food Anthropomorphism: a study of anthropomorphic food in The Magic Pudding, The Short Life and Happy Times of the Shmoo and Chicken Run". Submitted by Kun Teng Teng (M-A8-5523-2) for the degree of Master of Art in English Studies at the University of Macau in June, 2016 Anthropomorphism occurs when a nonhuman object acquires a human attribute or personality and so subjectivity (typically that of a character in a story). In food anthropomorphism, the nonhuman objects involved are the materials that can produce edible food, the animals that are meant to be food, or food itself. Anthropomorphic characters (both animals and food) can be commonly found in children's literature, and one of its effects is to allow the child readers to identify themselves with characters, who are, like them, not empowered and constrained in the way of adult humans. The question of empathy and identification is a key to this study which is principally interested in the ethics of food anthropomorphism. This thesis surveys cases of food anthropomorphism in a range of texts, while special attention is focused on Norman Lindsay's The Magic Pudding, A1 Capp's The Short Life and Happy Times of the Shmoo and Peter Lord and Nick Park's Chicken Run. By unfolding the journey of the pursuit of abundance and the discourse on the ideal social status in these three texts, I argue that the comparatively recent work, Chicken Run, takes a more positive perspective in the pursuit of the land of plenty.
