Western children's literature is increasingly popular in China. This genre has been widely translated, especially fantasy fiction (FF). A fantasy world requires creating backgrounds and names, which do not exist in reality. These names creates difficulties when being translated from E-C, thus a common children's fantasy fiction(CFF) translation-related concern is whether or not the names require translation. With such a background, the current thesis aims to carry out a comparative study on two Chinese versions of Harry Potter, The two Chinese versions are published by People's Literature Publishing House (PLPH) of Mainland China and Crown Culture Publishing Company, Ltd. (CCPCL) of Taiwan. The comparative study is separated into comparative and quantitative analysis. The comparative analysis intends to explore the difference between translation strategies and the translators’ preference while the quantitative analysis focuses on the common translation methods in the two Chinese versions of Harry Potter. The investigation follows the framework of Hans J. Vermeer's Skopostheorie and Lawrence Venuti's Domestication and Foreignization. From a series of detailed analysis of the two Chinese versions, this study comes to a conclusion that the two Chinese versions of Harry Potter apply different name translation strategies. Both domestication and foreignization are applied, with the Mainland version focusing on foreignization and the Taiwan one on domestication. The study results reveal that the translations’ preference in determining how the translation should be done is largely depends on the target text Skopos.
