Because oral traditions are speech acts that are “more communal, performance-oriented and dynamic”, it seems merited to place them second to the “more individual, fixed and preemptive” written texts (Lundquist 4). History begins with the written record, but literature does not, Presumably, when human beings learnt how to draw a star, we started using languages to express ourselves and make art. Just like the Chinese will not deny in their poetic history the original and monumental significance of Shih-ching, or the Book of Odes, the Greeks will not overlook the impact of these Homeric hymns, with their spirit, themes and styles, exerted upon the poetry of later ages. Living close to nature and aspiring to manifold religious beliefs have inspired primitive men to write poems that are far different from that of ours today, So far, studies have focus on the contrast between aborigines’ oral art forms and the white’s. A parallel comparison between two indigenous oral traditions is thus worth a try. In this article, I have endeavored to explore the relations and difference American Indian poetry and Zhuang Chinese poetry enjoy in terms of shaping force, characteristics of style and theme. It is intended that a better understanding and appreciation of creative merits and aesthetic values of poetry will be achieved during this investigation and which, will further assist me in my own creative writing.
