Is L1- and L2- speakers' understanding of polysemous words underlain by the same image schemas? : the case of Stand

English Abstract

The present study aims to investigate whether second language (L2) speakers are underlain by the same embodied meanings in the form of image schemas when understanding the polysemous word stand as first language (L1) speakers. Following Gibbs et al.'s research (1994), four experiments were conducted on L2 speakers. Experiment 1 investigated which image schemas are most relevant to stand. Experiment 2 investigated how L2 speakers would group 32 expressions containing stand. Experiment 3 examined whether image schema profile can relate to the grouping in experiment 2. Experiment 4 aimed to examine the possible influence of context in participants' grouping in experiment 2. In total, there are 45 participants with Chinese as their first language and English as their second language in the present study. All participants are students of University of Macao, and they all took the mock test of TOEFL in either 2014 or 2015. Two important results have been found. First, L2 speakers rate the relevance between 12 selected image schemas and the polysemous word stand differently from L1 speakers. Second, different from the L1 speakers, image schema profiles do not significantly relate to the sorting activity in L2 speakers.
