Abstract of A Comparison of Native English Speakers and ESL Learners Spatial Image Schema of Verbs Richardson, Spivey, Edelman and Naples (2001) conducted a study in native English speakers' image schema of 30 verbs with different degrees of concreteness (concrete or abstract) and spatial motions, and they suggested that the majority of the participants in the study projected the same directional image schema (horizontal or vertical motion) for verbs when they comprehended verbs with distinct spatial motions since they used the same language in communication. This paper is a replication of Richardson et al.'s study (2001) on ESL speakers. It investigates the significance of verb concreteness and the underlying cognitive spatial motion of verbs on ESL learners' spatial schema, and the extent to which ESL learners are able to access the same image schema as the native English participants in Richardson et al.'s study (2001) do. The data gathered from questionnaires shows a substantial agreement across the 40 ESL participants. The analysis of the data demonstrates that the concreteness of verbs does not show significance of their spatial schema of verbs, but the spatial motion of verbs which is encoded in the cognitive imagery of the verbs is notable. Comparisons and analyses of ESL speakers in this study and the native English speakers in Richardson et al. (2001) are made according to the expected axes of the verbs individually and further study suggestions are proposed.
