Title

English in Hong Kong movie naming and posters

English Abstract

Abstract Some earlier studies in written discourse which are applied with theories and methods that center on spoken data often cannot analyze the mixed-language discourse profoundly. This paper examines the multilingual elements in Hong Kong movie names and posters with methods and frameworks that especially focus on written multilingualism in order to provide a modest contribution. Analysis of English in Hong Kong moving naming by the 7 threshold socio-psychological features (Bhatia and Ritchie, 2013) showed the possible effects that English delivers. Furthermore, the framework to analyze multilingual texts presented by Sebba (2012) is adopted to illustrate the Hong Kong movie posters in three different stages of the Hong Kong film industry. The results are discussed in terms of the significant features and dynamic changes in the usage of English in Hong Kong movie naming and posters. Ideas about further research on the topic are also discussed.
