Documentary film, due to its nature of documenting factual information and visual media, has been playing a significant role in the current globalised world. Thanks to the development of technology, the proliferation of documentary film also leads to a greater demand of the translation of this genre. However, current research on Audiovisual Translation (AVT) is still under-addressed. More specifically, literature on translating documentary films is even limited. The current study aims to investigate how culture- specific items (CSI), which are closely tied up to a country's culture, geography and history, are rendered in subtitling a particular local-based documentary film Footprints in Macao, so as to find out what strategies are more frequently used to bridge the SL and TL culture, especially in the genre of documentary film, where the heavy information load and limited space for subtitles on screen come into conflict. The current study is carried out on both qualitative and quantitative basis. Altogether 166 CSI were collected and categorised according to Nida's cultural categories, coupled with their translation in the target text. Then the study identified the translation strategies to each item according to a list of frequently used strategies in the context of subtitling. The result illustrates that literal translation and loan are the; most frequently used strategies in rendering the CSI in the case study. Though these two tend to take up much space on screen, the translator prefers to preserve the original information and stay loyal to the ST.
