ABSTRACT Singable song translation is on its own a special topic. Translator who is charged with such assignment faces not only the usual problems of cultural elements, linguistic issues, the orientation on source or target text, etc, but also the inviolable music that comes hand-in-hand with the verbal code. The present research focuses its discussion on localization of musicals. By adopting the Pentathlon Principle, this thesis examines the analytical process gone through by the translator when devising a lyric rendition. It concerns itself with how the songs are dealt with in practice and why they are so treated. A case study is conducted, in an explanatory and descriptive manner, on the musical numbers from The Phantom ofthe Opera. Results indicate the attributes outlined by the Principle, namely Singability, Rhythm, Sense, Naturalness and Rhyme, function as effective framework for the formulation and evaluation of the target text. The study also shows adaptation being a justified approach on account of the constraints imposed by the attributes. Paraphrasing, in particular, is the most frequently found method to preserve the meaning of the source text. Findings suggest each criterion under the Principle be respected for a balanced output. Put differently, one should refrain from striking a perfect score in every aspect. Keywords: Singable Song Translation, Lyric Translation, Adaptation, Translation Strategies
