Title

A regression analysis on factors predicting Chinese box office revenue

English Abstract

Research on western motion picture markets suggests that production budget, star power and word-of-mouth are the most common box office predictors, among other things. This study asks whether these factors apply to the growing Chinese motion picture market and, in particular, what the effect of word-of-mouth is on box office revenue. Data of the best-selling Chinese movies in 2012 are collected and tested with a regression model. Results confirm literature showing that the opening number of screens is a significant predictor of Chinese box office revenue, while other factors do not show obvious effects.
