Comparative study on value in popular media context : analyzing the main characters in cartoons from China and U.S.

English Abstract

The current study takes the typical animation as the object, the themes and content of animation are analyzed to comprehensively understand the different cultural values between China and U.S. Hero is the eternal pursuit of mankind's dreams, it is also the basic theme in oriental or western culture reflected on literature, film and other art works. By comparing the interpretation of heroism in different regions may show the differences of culture. This paper attempts to explore the different values in popular media content by comparing eight main characters in cartoons from China and U.S. during 30 years. The four main value systems in this research are: appearance, characteristic, self-image and relationship with others, and it also have 28 sub-values. The result obviously shows the main value in American is individualistic heroism, while the main value in China is collectivism. Besides, country, stage of story and period were adopted to reflect and influence the main value. In U.S, the later stage, the value of self-image and relationship are more tend to collectivism, the later period, the appearance is more tend to individualistic. In China, it shows the main value in terms of appearance turn to value of individualism in recent years.
