The relationship between France and NATO is complex. France, was as the founding member of the Atlantic Alliance in the context of cold war. While, in 1966 De Gaulle managed to remove France from NATO’s integrated military structure. Sarkozy announced to reintegrate NATO’s military command structure in 2009. Therefore, researches on France's NATO policies in the past and present have great significance. France's relations with NATO is not merely a bilateral relationship, directly involved in the EU's relations with NATO and Franco-American relationship. This paper attempts to explore the differences of France’s NATO policy and the reasons behind France’s decisions. With the understanding and review of France and NATO relations, historical Analysis will be applied in this paper. Moreover, what effects the changes of France’s NATO policy? Is French return to NATO’s integrated military structure contradictions with the past? This paper will adopt levels-of-analysis to make a comprehensive analysis. The paper makes respective hypotheses about the fact that the three factors above played a role in the formation of France’s NATO policy; after that, the thesis tests the hypotheses about the existence of the three factors to the reliable historical archives and documents.
