The relationship between politic regime, economic development and NGO participation : a comparative study of five selected Asian countries

English Abstract

NGO is getting crucial as a role to uphold human rights in both local governance and global governance. However, there are still many human rights violations reported all over the world regardless of the level of economic development of each nation. NGOs seem to show different level of effectiveness in different countries yet this phenomenon seems not relevant to the economic aspect of country but relevant to the political aspect. This thesis aimed to examine the correlation between level of economic development and the political regimes that affected the effectiveness of NGO’s operation in a nation. Also, the paper also discusses the factors that contributed an effective NGO operation. Five countries in Asia Pacific region are chosen for case study including India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Viet Nam that these countries are meticulously chosen based on different political regimes that each country is adopted and different level of the economic development of each targeted country, in which intended to show contrast human rights situations of each country and comparison of the effectiveness of NGO’s operation in each country
