Resumo A escritora portuguesa Maria Ondina Braga residiu em Macau na década de sessenta (entre 1961 e 1965), foi docente duma escola secundária dessa cidade chinesa governada pelas autoridades portuguesas naquele tempo. Esta escritora, durante os seus dias em Macau, conheceu uma grande variedade de pessoas, especialmente, emigrantes chineses, tomando conhecimento de muitos assuntos da cultura chinesa, sobretudo de muitos usos e costumes chineses, misteriosos e curiosos para ela - uma europeia de cultura ocidental. Com base nessas suas experiências em Macau, ela escreveu a colectânea de contos A China fica ao lado que tem elevado valor histórico-cultural e importante posição na literatura de Macau em língua portuguesa. No presente trabalho, atendendo aos princípios teóricos da Imagologia, sobretudo de Daniel-Henri Pageaux, Álvaro Manuel Machado e Joep Leersseen, entre outros, vamos focar a atenção nas descrições mostradas nos contos de A China fica ao lado para analisar principalmente as imagens de Macau, nas décadas de quarenta a sessenta do Século XX, mas também, complementarmente, a oposição entre as imagens da China "nova e antiga" daquela época. As análises das imagens de Macau são desenvolvidas através dos estudos textuais interno e externo, sob a teoria da imagologia, contemplando alguns importantes conceitos dessa área, como por exemplo, "imagem", estereótipo", ou "imaginário social colectivo", entre outros. As análises e pesquisa têm a finalidade de revelar o panorama social dessa cidade com fusão das culturas chinesa e europeia nas décadas de quarenta a sessenta do século XX, assim como a visão da autora perante as sociedades de Macau e da China, marcada pelo "espírito" do humanismo, pelo respeito e a preocupação com as mulheres chinesas e com a coexistência das diferentes culturas religiosas chinesa e ocidentais com diferentes valores sociais. Abstract The Portuguese writer Maria Ondina Braga, living in Macau in the sixties (between 1961 and 1965), was a secondary school teacher of this Chinese city ruled by the Portuguese authorities at the time. During her days in Macau, the writer met a variety of people, especially Chinese immigrants, and got to know many aspects of Chinese culture, especially the Chinese customs and traditions, which were mysterious to her, a European writer from western culture. Basing on the experience in Macau, she wrote a collection of short stories, China is Next Door (China fica ao lado), which is of great historical and cultural values and occupy an important position in Macau literature in Portuguese. In this study, according to the imagology theory, especially of Daniel-Henri Pageaux, Álvaro Manuel Machado and Joep Leersseen, we focus on the detailed dipictions in China is Next Door (China fica ao lado) to primarily analyze the images of Macau from the forties to sixties of the twentieth century, and also the confrontation between the images of the "new and old" China at the time. The analysis in this dissertation are developed through internal and external methodologies based on the theory of imagology, focusing on some important concepts in this area, such as "image", "stereotype", "imaginary collective social" and so on. Our aim is to reveal the representations of the different lives of macanese at that time and the social landscape of this Chinese city with the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures for a long period of time, from the forties to sixties of the twentieth century. We explore the author's attitude towards the societies of Macau and China and their cultures as well, her humanism, respect and concern for Chinese women, and coexistence of Chinese and Western religious cultures with different social values.
