ENRICHING MEDIA USAGE IN WIKIS BY EXPLOITING INTER-LINGUAL LINK STRUCTURE by Miguel Gomes da Costa Junior Thesis Supervisor: Dr. Robert P. Biuk-Aghai (Assistant Professor) Master of Science in Software Engineering People are constantly creating and consuming visual content. This research proposes a methodology to enrich user-generated content by identifying different or novel visual content by exploiting existing inter-lingual link structure of several collaborative data content sets, such as many of the Wikimedia projects including Wikivoyage. Pages on the same topic written in different languages are connected through inter-lingual links. Since those pages are not automatic translations, but usually written by different authors in their native language, there is a high probability that those pages contain different visual content images. Based on this assumption, the proposed automated method will compare the images from the user’s native language page with images from the existing inter-lingual linked pages on the topic, and then provide a list with the different and/or novel images. Contributors will decide which images they would like to use to enrich the original page.
