Translation behaviour “tends to manifest certain regularities” (Toury, 1995:56), which are often shared by a community and conceptualised as translational norms. This study follows Toury’s proposal on descriptive translation studies, and examines three types of norms identified by Toury – initial, preliminary and operational norms – in two Chinese translations of The Great Gatsby. It explores the extent to which the norms play a part in the production of the translations, one by George Kao (2001) and the other by Miranda Wang (2012), from the stage of selection of source materials to the decision on the use of translation strategies. The thesis aims to lend support to Toury’s (2001) observation that translator’s inter-subjectivity is influential to translational practice, on the other hand, translator’s subjectivity is affected by translational norms. It is believed that translators are the key decision makers in translational process, who determine what should be introduced in the target text and the strategies to apply in their translation. Working under different conditions, translators, even the same translator, may apply different solutions, and consequently no single translation product will be the same with another. Their solutions and their use of strategies reveal translation norms. By comparing translation examples taken from the two translations of The Great Gatsby and examining the strategies used by the two translators, the thesis makes use of specific examples in context to better understand the importance of translation norms and translators’ subjectivity.
