This dissertation analyzes the poetic images in the poem (Chang Hen Ge) of the great Chinese poet Bai Juyi (701-762) and also the re-creation strategies of such images in the translation into Portuguese “Canto do Remorso Perpétuo” by António Graça de Abreu (1947-) with bases in the categories of images proposed by J. A. Cuddon (2013). Initially, for the understanding of the images in Chang Hen Ge, one of the greatest poems in the period of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the research seeks to introduce some basic notions of the Tang Dynasty‟s poetry, the contextualization of Bai Juyi‟s poem and its dominant aspects, in both formal and thematic terms. Then, the research tries to delineate and conceptualize the translation strategies employed by Graça de Abreu in order to reproduce the poetic images in Chang Hen Ge in Portuguese, such as preservation, omission, replacement, foreignization and annotation, among other strategies. This investigation on the translation of images in the poem Chang Hen Ge is a support for the future translation of classical Chinese poetry into Portuguese.
