Title

An integrated review of theories and research related to the influence of parenting styles on juvenile delinquency

English Abstract

Juvenile delinquency is a problem across many countries. Various studies have been conducted to find out the reasons and factors causing delinquency. Parenting is one of the important determinants of children’s deviant behaviors, but the mechanism of the effect of parenting on delinquency is not clearly defined. This research reviews the general theory of crime, the social control theory, and integrating the parenting styles to explain juvenile delinquency from a different perspective. Prior researches are reviewed to find the relationships between parenting, self-control, social control, cultural factors and delinquency. Results suggested that self-control and social control mediate between parenting and delinquency, and the cultural stability of general theory of crime is supported across countries. Conclusions and implications are drawn, showing that the results of researches vary. Suggestions are provided to government and individuals to reduce juvenile delinquency from the perspective of parenting and further researches should be further discussed in later studies.
