The challenges encountered in the subtitles in Portuguese, based on the subtitles in English, of Chinese film I Want to Dance with examination of the strategies used Feng Xiaoze This work consists of an analysis of the subtitles in portuguese to chinese film I Want to Dance (“Kāi Shuǐ Yào Tàng, Gū Niáng Yào Zhuàng”,《开水要烫，姑娘要壮》), from director Hu Shu. The story of the film happens in a community of ethnic minority Miao, one of the 55 ethnic minority groups in China. Subtitles were translated into portuguese indirectly, from English into Portuguese, by a native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese. Based on theories of audiovisual translation and pivot translation, besides the translation categories presented by Mona Baker, this thesis analyzes the translation strategies of Portuguese subtitles. Cultural elements relating to ethnic minority Miao are considered in the analysis of translation of subtitles.
