Title

China, Portugal and Britain in Macau : a study on Macau's status from 1839 to 1862

English Abstract

Under the new international political situation during the two Opium Wars, the status of Macau changed immensely because it became more depended on the wills of China, Portugal and Britain. Through adjusting their settlement in Macau, the Portuguese proclaimed “strict neutrality”. For the nature of the Portuguese so-called “strict neutrality”, it was more like “two-faced neutrality” because they would be partial to both China and Britain to avoid overstepping their bounds whenever the situation changed. Consequently, Macau kept its balance among the competitions of the great powers in Asia and fought for the best interests of its status. The “Macau Question” offered an important insight on the changes of China with the Western nations and their attitudes towards Macau in the modern history.
