Title

Red attractions : the reasons that the educated young women joined the CCP during China's War of Resistance against Japan

English Abstract

When the Chinese nation was in grave crisis during China’s War of Resistance against Japan, some educated young women (mostly middle school and college student from well-to-do or wealthy family background) in China chose to join the less powerful CCP instead of joining the ruling party GMD or staying in their relatively comfortable lives. After a careful analysis of both primary and secondary resources, three major motivations or driving forces were identified behind their seemingly unusual choices, including the opportunity to fight for national salvation, temptation for female liberation and sexual equality, and the attraction of the novel ideology of socialism. Key Words: Educated Young Women, CCP, China’s War of Resistance against Japan
