In 2011, Macao’s gaming industry revenue was five times larger than the gross gaming of the Las Vegas Strip in the USA. Since Macao’s gaming liberalization in 2001, the country has become increasingly reliant on tourism and hospitality, which accounts for over 80% of its GDP. There have been calls to diversify Macao’s hospitality economy since casino liberalization and the MICE \(Meetings, Incentive travel, Conventions, Exhibitions\) industry is an emerging sector in the tourism and hospitality industry worth examining. Literature has identified qualified human resources as a critical factor in the development of a MICE industry and currently it is a limiting factor for growth. A rise to the human resources challenges will become a notable obstacle to the development of this industry. With this in mind, this thesis seeks to identify and assess the human resources challenges of the MICE industry through a series of in-depth interviews, which were conducted with 16 Macao’s MICE experts. This thesis reported on the findings from the series of qualitative interviews, which were supplemented by secondary data research. This thesis has also endeavored to provide solutions to the HR challenges faced by the MICE industry by drawing on both outcomes from the data and related literature.
