As a special form of coercive diplomacy tool, international sanctions have a long history. Since the early 1900s, foreign economic sanctions gradually became an important and frequently used tool of foreign policy, which had a significant impact on international political relations. Economic sanctions are widely used to achieve a variety of foreign policy goals, including goals against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, support for nuclear disarmament, the fight against drug trafficking, counter-terrorism, the end of civil war and the promotion of democracy and human rights processes. The wide application of sanctions policy makes it a meaningful area to research. Currently in China, research on economic sanctions is mainly based on the United States. Few scholars ask the EU to be part of their state sanction implementation research. It makes this thesis study difficult and challenging. This paper will be divided into 8 chapters including an introduction, literature review, chapters on theoretical framework and research methods, Sanction Policy analysis, three case study analyses, and the conclusion. The paper will go through this list and describe to show each sanction’s motive, purpose and effect. And through the cases of the European Union ban on arms sales to China, EU sanctions on Burma and on Syria to show the actual operation, and can reflect the characteristics and problems of EU sanctions.
