Family, school, and peers are the systems that hearing-impaired adolescents have most contact with and have an important impact on their development. However, they may experience difficulties when communicating with the hearing others. The current study focused on the socialization experiences of hearing-impaired adolescents in Macau. The central research question was what the social lived experiences of the hearing-impaired adolescents in Macau were like. Five hearingimpaired adolescents aged from 16 to 19 years and who did not use sign language studying in mainstream schools in Macau were interviewed using the Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique (CLET) as a semi-structured interview approach. The hearing-impaired adolescents experienced different challenges when interacting with hearing others. Some of them were able to establish close relationship with their hearing peers, while some experienced loneliness. In-depth understandings about the challenges and relationship patterns of the socialization of the hearing-impaired adolescents are discussed.
