This thesis is about Macau’s political and social circumstances reflected by its media during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). During this period, almost the whole world including China’s mainland was trapped in the Second World War. However, Macau was an “islet” out of fire. In this thesis, I will try to explore the choice, tendency and social-political dynamics of Macau, the “islet” during the wartime period. Focusing on the Chinese newspapers in Macau, taking the Madison, Jornal “Va Kio”, Shi Min Daily and Southwest Daily as the primary sources, this work explores the ideology and theory that guided Macau’s Chinese newspapers’ approach, role and function during the Sino-Japanese War. It contains four main parts: 1) the fundraising news in the patriotic Chinese newspapers in Macau and the national salvation movement carried out by these newspapers; 2) different approaches and tendencies between Macau’s patriotic Chinese newspapers and Japanese puppet Chinese newspapers on reporting the same historical event; 3) different ways of reporting Macau’s patriotic newspapers under different circumstances and censorship policies; and 4) special layout designs on dates with national significance during the war: the study of the patriotic logos in Shi Min Daily. My research shows that “nationalism” was the most important approach that guided Macau’s patriotic Chinese newspapers during the Sino-Japanese War. Specifically, Macau’s patriotic Chinese newspapers showed national sentiment, advocated national awareness and launched national movement. The activities and actions of these newspapers reflected the process in which “social elites and intellectuals mobilized the society through nationalist ideology, challenged the political power, with the ultimate goal of obtaining political power and establishing a modern nation state”.1 To be certain, the “nationalism” presented by Macau’s patriotic Chinese newspapers was distinct and strong as China was trapped in the Sino-Japanese War. The special wartime period stimulated and led to the “nationalism phenomenon”. This thesis also uses the “frame theory” in journalism to explain the rationale behind the tendency of Macau’s Chinese newspapers. I applied the “subjective strategies” in the theory “News Frame” to study Macau’s Chinese newspapers during the Sino-Japanese War.
