The present study examined the coping styles and mood states of student-athletes and non-athletes from secondary and tertiary schools in Beijing and Macau, and explored the impacts of background information on coping and moods, correlation between the two variables, the predictors of moods, as well as the comparison between the two groups on correlation and regression analyses. 724 participants including 358 student-athletes and 366 non-athletes from Beijing and Macau were investigated by questionnaires. Results indicated that for both student-athletes and non-athletes, those who adopted more mature coping styles reported higher positive moods, those who used more immature coping styles showed greater negative moods; for student-athletes, predictors for different negative moods varied, whereas for non-athletes, predictor for all the negative moods was self-blame; in regression models, predictive power was larger on all the mood states among non-athletes, compared to student-athletes.
