ABSTRACT Public notice is a communication channel for either governmental or non-governmental organizations in Greater China Area including Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland to provide information to the public and to call for their cooperation. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the text types and functions of public notices used in the area and to discuss the translation strategies and methods commonly used as well as reasons behind the translator's decisions. Reiss's text type theory, Nord's translation-oriented model of text functions analysis and Newmark's semantic and communicative translation strategies are used as the theoretical framework. The study aims at investigating a collection of public notices collected from websites, travel spots and public places in the area. It is expected that different text types use different translation strategies, result of which is that either semantic or communicative translation is applied in the informative and expressive texts, but mainly communicative translation is applied in the operative text.
