The dissertation commences with a brief introduction of the texts compared: LiaozhaiZhiyi(《聊齋誌異》)by Pu Songling(1640-1715) and The Celtic Twilight by William Butler Yeats (1865 - 1939). The historical and cultural background and the generic structure and characteristics of the two collections are considered. Two specific stories, 'Luocha Haishi’(〈羅刹海市〉) and 'Nie Xiaoqian'(〈聶小倩〉)are chosen from Liaozhai. Ideas of virtue and conduct are foregrounded in the discussion of the fantasy world created by Pu in these stories. A number of ghost stories from The Celtic Twilight are discussed individually. The Yeats's stories are organised in the following chapters: 'Village Ghosts’, 'The Man and His Boots', 'Kidnappers ', 'Drumcliff and Rosses’, 'Concerning the Nearness Together of Heaven, Earth, and Purgatory’ and 'A Remonstrance with Scotsmen for Having Soured the Disposition of their Ghosts and Faeries’. Of key interest in the discussion of these tales are attitudes of the protagonists towards the spirits and supernatural phenomena. After elaborating the significance of the chosen stories, the dissertation further compares the moral lessons description of characters and attitudes to life and religion in each of the tales. The dangers and difficulties involved in this kind of cultural comparison are considered. While the two collections are similarly structured, these texts provide the reader with a range of ideas concerning temptation, supernatural power, ethical relations between the living and the dead, as well as the relationship between reality and fantasy.
