The aim of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of stabilizing clay soils from Macau by lime stabilization. This investigation consists of two main parts, namely, stabilization of soil with lime column and stabilization of the same clay by directly mixing with various proportions of lime. The lime used was quick lime and the soil used was marine clay from Macau for all the investigation carried out in this thesis. In the first part of this investigation, the Macau clay was deposited in slurry form in a fabricated steel tank. After a few days time, a central hole of 75mm diameter was drilled and was filled up with quick lime. Undisturbed soil samples were collected at 125mm and 250mm from the center of lime column after 7, 14 and 28 days curing times. X-ray diffraction analysis, Scanning electron microscope studies, Atterberg limit tests, Strength tests and Consolidation tests had been carried out on the soil samples extracted. The second part of this investigation consists of mixing the same Macau clay with various percentages of quick lime, namely, 3, 6, 9 and 12% of dry weight of soil. The influence of curing times of 1, 7 and 21 days on those properties had been studied on the index and engineering properties of the soil. X-ray diffraction analysis, Scanning electron microscope studies, the pH values, Atterberg limit tests, Strength tests and Consolidation tests had been carried out on the soil samples mixed with various percentages of quick lime. The influence of addition of 3% gypsum along with the various percentages of quick lime on the index and engineering properties of Macau clay had also been investigated. It was found that the stabilization of the Macau clay with direct mixing of the quick lime and gypsum was relatively more effective.
