The study of women's history has always been an important branch of historical research. Scholars often use "women have no external affairs" (furen wu waishi婦人無外事) to summarize the status of women in ancient China. "Inner and outer," associated with the gender relationship between men and women, has become an important concept to describe the division of labor between men and women and the gender order in ancient times. However, with the deepening of research, scholars have discovered that there is no absolute separation between inner and outer, and the flexibility between the inner and outer has become the key to exploring the real living space for women. This thesis will start with the traditional concept of "inner and outer" and try to interpret the distinction between inner and outer under the Confucian perspective. In the Song Dynasty, when Confucianism thrived, Confucian scholars re-explained this concept in Canons for establishing a gender order to achieve the ideal social stability. However, by researching historical materials such as epitaphs and pictures, the thesis finds that elite women had many activities that can cross the distinction between inner and outer in the Song Dynasty. The study will show us a more authentic state of women and reflect the contradiction between ideal and reality in the concept of the "inner and outer."
