Abstract
Abstract : According to Macau cancer registry, cervical cancer is the fifth commonest cancer among women, the eighth leading cause of female cancer deaths in 2003. There were 28 new cases of invasive cervical cancer (not including cervical carcinoma in situ) and claimed 6 lives in 2003. For women aged ≧ 15 year old, the cumulative coverage rate of pap smear by all health centers was 21.5% in 2002 and 22.9% in 2003. It was far away from the target population coverage since a pap screening coverage rate of at least 70% is required for noticeable decline incidence and mortality of cervical cancer. Objective: To evaluate women's knowledge and awareness of cervical cancer, risk factor and Pap smear. To identify the barriers and the motivate approach for Pap smear. Long term goal is to achieve higher pap smear coverage, to reduce incidence and mortality of cervical cancer and improve quality of life. Methods: A questionnaire was designed to obtain information. The survey was taken in 7 health centers of Macao, 2005. Inviters were women, non-family planning attendants in health centers, age 25 to 65, with cervix, ever have sexual activity, never have Pap smear. Data was coded, entered and had analysis. Results: Totally 350 questionnaire were completed, 322 (92%) were qualified. 35.4% inviters reviewed that they did not recognize any kind factors of cervical cancer. 50.3% of inviters knew the purpose and advantage of Pap smear. 18.3% of participates reported were advised by doctors of health centers to have a Pap smear. 46% of participates claimed that "Without dicomfort, unnecessary to have Pap smear" as the top barrier. Media (63.3%) and medical staff explain (26.1%) were preferable promote approaches. Conclusion: An important proportion of women's awareness about cervical cancer, risk factors and the preventive nature of Pap smear were not adequate. Media and medical team were two popular approaches to promote Pap smear. The importance of screening for early detection of cervical cancer has been stressed through the media in recent years.
